Identifying A True Saint (Mahapurush)

Jagadguru Shri kripalu Ji maharaj Daughter Dr Vishakha Tripathi Ji Blog on our Badi Didi Identifying A True Saint (Mahapurush)

As written by H.H. Sushri Dr. Vishakha Tripathi Ji in Her book, Spirituality in Daily Living

It is very difficult to determine the true nature of anyone, let alone a Saint (Mahapurush), simply by observing his external behaviour. A Saint, i.e., one who has attained God and is well-versed in all the scriptures, can only be known by another Saint of his level because, like God, his true identity is beyond the grasp of the material senses, mind and intellect.

Nevertheless, a Saint has to be recognised using perceptual, inferential and scriptural evidence. If this were not possible, then no one would have ever attained God. So although recognising a Saint requires time and effort, it has to be done if you desire to attain God.

Actually, any effort to evaluate the divinity of a Saint is as ridiculous as a child learning the alphabet evaluating the knowledge of a university professor. Yet, innumerable aspirants have identified Guru, surrendered to him, followed his spiritual instructions and eventually attained God.

So we too must follow the same rules and tread the same path. So let us now reflect upon three points made by Shri Maharaj Ji that will help you to recognise and identify a genuine Saint.

Firstly, the most evident proof is that by seeing and associating with him, your mind begins to get naturally attached to God and detached from the world. The degree of attachment will vary from person to person.

For example, a magnet attracts iron. However, if the iron is impure, then the attraction will be slower. The greater the percentage of impurity, the lesser the attraction will be. This is not the fault of the magnet, mind you, but the impurities mixed with the iron.

In the same way, a spiritual aspirant is attracted to a Saint according to the purity of his heart. The purer the heart, the greater the degree of attraction. This explains why we see some people getting immediately attracted to a Saint, others after some time, some remaining indifferent, and some even speaking ill of the Saint.

Secondly, being well-versed in all the scriptures, only a true Saint can practically resolve all difficulties and remove all confusions that arise in the mind of an aspirant on the spiritual path. Only he can impart spiritual knowledge through correct understanding.

Thirdly, direct evidence of the genuineness of a Saint can also be deduced from witnessing the ocean of divine love in his heart manifest externally, in the form of various states of ecstatic divine emotions.

The most important point to be noted in conclusion is that a genuine Saint cannot be recognised right away; it requires time. Moreover, the scriptures mention faith as a basic prerequisite for being able to identify a Saint. What is certain is that it is absolutely impossible to recognise a Saint merely on the basis of intellectual ability.
